Trim your arborvitae in the early spring, while it's still dormant. Gently prune it, taking care to remove no more than one-third of the plant at a time. When you prune, focus on shaping. To shape, simply cut the tips of the branches, rather than cutting deep into the old wood.

I hope my answer helps you! 😊 Do it in early spring, and don't worry about the dead wood. You can always prune it away during the growing season.
